AI Cooking Recipes | Compare Trending AI Recipe Generators - My Abode Home (1)

When it comes to AI, there’s been a lot of excitement about what it can do with photography, illustrations, and even writing, but what about AI cooking recipes? Could AI help you come up with recipes for dinner? I threw some ingredients at an AI powered recipe generator or two and came up with some surprising results.

How is AI Used in Cooking?

You can use AIfor meal planning and to create new recipes from your ingredient list.

AI Generates Recipes in 2 Ways

  1. Use Chat GPT, (an AI tool for various AI needs). Give it prompts including all the ingredients you have on hand. Next you will receive several recipe options.
  2. Use AI recipe generators. Their one and only specific task is to create recipes based on the ingredients you give it.

Both Chat GPT and at least one recipe generator I found, have both a paid account version and a free account option. Most of the free level recipe generators limit how many recipescan be generated. Chat GPT, however does not limit the amount of recipes you can ask for, but you do need to specify how many examples you want in the prompts.

For fun, I thought I’d compare AI recipe generators and see which is the best one. Read to the end to see which AI recipe I chose to make for dinner.

Best AI Recipe Generator For AI Cooking Recipes

1. DishGen

This one seems to be the most popular. To date they are the first AI recipe generator that comes up in search on Google.

  • The free version offers 15 recipe credits per month and you can save your history.
  • The premium version is just $7.99 a month. As expected this version offers unlimited unique recipes and no ads.
  • The pro version has some interesting features. It seems to be geared towards food bloggers. It has an AI image generation tool, which is in beta and offers a commercial license to use and distribute recipes for $15.99 a month.

My Ingredients

I gave DishGen the following ingredients to come up with a recipe:

1 Can of Black Eye Peas

1 Cup of stir fry vegetables

1 package of Martha Stewart Cornbread.

Details

I used the demo version, which is the step below the free version. Without signing up for a package (even the free one) you can use the demo version for 3 total credits and generate recipes.

DishGen AI Generator Summary

I noticed that Dishgen gave me very simple recipes.

  1. The first, Southern Comfort Casserole only included the exact ingredients I gave the Ai recipe generator. In the steps, Dishgen suggested I simply mix the black eyed peas and stir fry vegetables in a casserole dish. Then top the vegetables with the cooked cornbread and cook for 25-30 minutes.
  2. The second recipe, Southern Fusion Stir fry did instruct me to add in soy sauce, hot sauce, and to use olive oil. The recipe stated to stir fry the vegetables in a skillet with olive oil. Then mix in some hot sauce and soy sauce for flavor. The cornbread is prepared separately and then eaten on the side.

Pluses of Dishgen AI Cooking Recipes

  • Recipes are very simple. The few ingredients they add to the recipe you are very likely to already have at home.
  • Gives an ingredients list and a step list.

Minuses of Dishgen AI Cooking Recipes

Too Simple
  • Sometimes recipes are TOO simple, to the point that you’re just taking your ingredients on hand and warming them up.

The Southern Comfort Casserole recipe is more in line with what I would expect from an AI recipe generator. I felt we were creating a dish. However the dish recipe was inaccurate in the following ways:

Lack of Seasoning
  • Neither dish called for any seasons on the stir fry vegetables and beans, so I question how delicious they’ll be.
Recipe Inaccuracies
  • It instructed me to prepare and cook the cornbread mixture first and then only once it’s prepared was I to add it to the stir fry and beans in the casserole dish. Then cook everything for 25-30 minutes at 375 degrees. Because the cornbread was already cooked once, following these directions would have burned the cornbread on top to the point the whole dish would have been inedible.
Full Ingredient List Seems to Be Missing
  • I was never instructed on what to put in the casserole dish to keep it from sticking (normally some oil or butter).

2. Meal Practice

This free AI recipe generator tool is more point and click and you don’t have an option to input ingredients you have on hand. You have the following options available:

1 Protein

2 Nutritional Style

3 Cuisine

  • Beef
  • Chicken
  • Fish
  • Pork
  • Turkey
  • Plant
  • Healthy
  • Hearty
  • Low Carb
  • Whole Foods

This category offered a number of international options to choose from (like Mexican, Thai, etc) including American. Then randomly Barbeque was also an option, which was the only choice in Cuisine that wasn’t a ethnic food style choice.

I chose plant, Healthy, and American. I was then given 3 recipe options:

  • Mouth Watering Mushroom Burger
  • Savory Spinach and Feta Stuffed Bell Peppers
  • Tantalizing Tofu Stir Fry

To test the site out, I chose these three options multiple times and each time I was given 3 different interesting recipes.

Pluses of Meal Practice AI Cooking Recipes

  • Gives an in depth list of ingredients to use, yet they aren’t far out ingredients that aren’t readily available at your local market.
  • Gives detailed instructions on how to prepare the recipe including seasons and oil to use in preparation.
  • Completely free

Minuses of Meal Practice AI Cooking Recipes

  • You can’t input your own ingredients to come up with a recipe.

3. Meal Genie

This meal generator specifically takes the ingredients you input and gives you a keto recipe to make. I tried 3 times to put in my ingredients of black eyed peas, stir fry vegetables, and Martha Stewart cornbread. The first two times the meals were way off base and didn’t even include my starter ingredients.

The first AI generated recipe was Fried Rice with Shrimp, Spinach, and Green Peas. I suppose the shrimp and green peas were supposed to represent the stir-fry vegetables, but there was nothing of the black eyed peas or corn bread included.

The second recipe was Squid Fritter Delight. Yes! You read that right, squid! I suppose the fritter part of the recipe was supposed to have some semblance of the cornbread.

I tried one more time.

And…

The third recipe was “creatively titled” Vegetarian Black Eye Peas Stir Fry with Martha Stewart Cornbread. This one I loved. It of course included all the ingredients I fed it, along with seasons like onion, garlic cloves, cumin, and pepper. There were instructions on how to prepare everything using olive oil and the cornbread was made to package directions and eaten on the side.

Pluses of Meal Genie AI Cooking Recipes

  • Recipes are thorough, including full directions and ingredients
  • Recipes include seasonings and flavorings
  • Recipes are complete dishes
  • Ai Cooking Recipes generator is free

Minuses of Meal Genie AI Cooking Recipes

  • May have to use prompts multiple times to get the exact dish you want, that includes your ingredients.
  • Recipes can give hard to obtain and expensive ingredients to make the meal

It is worth noting that Meal Genie automatically turns every search you make into a blog post with you as the author from the AI produced recipe. This could be a plus or a minus depending on your objectives.

The generators for AI cooking recipes had some unique and very interesting recipes. In the end I let my husband decide. I think, just the fact that I was using AI to help us choose dinner put him off a little. He’s a no fuss kind of guy and definitely not adventurous with his meals. So in the end he chose the Southern Fusion Stir Fry recipe by Dishgen because it was the simplest. This of course only called for me to stir fry vegetables with black eye peas and have cornbread on the side (something I could have done without a recipe generator).
