What Exactly IS a Hash Brown?!

Beef Hashbrown Casserole | Easy Hamburger Hash Brown Recipe (10)

Hash browns are potatoes that have been finely chopped and then browned in a pan or oven. It is hard to say how long people have been making hash browns, but a recipe for them has appeared in cookbooks as early as 1888. Some people even believe hash browns are inspired by a Swedish dish called “Roesti” that has been around since at least 1598. Whatever the case, hash browns have been around for quite some time!

Hi it’s Kristy in the Rada Kitchen. Today I’m making a recipe out of our “Fix, Freeze, Take and Bake” recipe book. This has 101 recipes for make ahead meals. It is great for busy moms who want to make over the weekend a bunch of meals. You can put them in the freezer and pop them in the oven.

Today I am making yummy beef and hashbrown casserole. So preheat your oven to 350 degrees. In a medium mixing bowl we are going to take 4 cups of frozen hashbrowns and 3 tablespoons of vegetable oil, actually I’m using olive oil. Get those all well coated. Now you’re going to press this into an 8 by 8 inch square baker. And we’re going to put this in the oven and bake it for about 15 minutes.

While our hashbrowns are in the oven, we’re going to brown a pound of ground beef in a medium sauce pan. So my hamburger is browned, I’ve drained it. I did use this handy Rada Food Chopper. It works really good to brown your hamburger and chop it up. Alright, so I’ve drained off the fat and I’m going to add to that a cup of water and then one envelope of brown gravy mix. So stir the gravy mix and water into your hamburger. We’re going to bring that up to a boil. So that has come up to a boil and we’re just going to cook this until it thickens, only a minute or two.

So now you remove the beef mixture from heat. And to this we are going to add two cups of frozen green beans, or vegetable of your choice. And then here I have a 2.8 ounce can of French’s Fried Onions. So we are going to put half of those in this mixture. And then you’ll need a cup of shredded cheddar cheese and you are going to add only half of that and stir it in. Now we’re going to pour our beef mixture over our hashbrowns. And we’re going to top this with our remaining fried onions and remaining cheddar cheese.

Now you’ll want to cover this and bake it in a 350 degree oven for 35 minutes. Take off the foil ad bake it another 15. Or you can put it in the freezer and freeze it for up to six month and then what you do is when you take it out of the freezer, let it thaw in the refrigerator overnight and then you’ll bake it the same way, 35 minutes covered, and then 15 minutes uncovered.
